The international importance of the People's Republic of China is steadily increasing, not only in the political and economic field, but also in the scientific and cultural fields. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA) therefore want to jointly promote and expand China competence in Germany. For this purpose, the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) presented its publication "China kennen, China können. Ausgangspunkte für den Ausbau von China-Kompetenz in Deutschland" (Engl. To know China, to be ready for China. Starting points for the expansion of China competence in Germany) at a joint event organized by the BMBF, KMK and AA last Monday (07.05.2018) in Berlin. The study can be read here.
According to the study, Chinese language skills, as well as knowledge of the country and intercultural competences belong to China competence. Thanks to the long-standing cooperation between CorEdu and Chinese educational institutions and companies, CorEdu not only promotes the exchange and transfer of knowledge in the VET sector, but also shares its experience and know-how within the framework of its China-competence.
CorEdu additionally assists companies in finding partners, submitting applications, planning and implementing education and training for educational staff and apprentices within the German funding programme Vocational Training Worldwide.
Together with Dr. Marthe Geiben, research associate in the working group »Fundamental Issues of Internationalization / Monitoring of VET Systems« at BIBB, Dr. Csepe-Bannert writes in the specialist journal Vocational Training in Research and Practice - BWP"on the topic: "Introduction of dual training in Slovakia - initial steps towards closer cooperation between school and companies".
The journal Vocational Training in Research and Practice - BWP publishes scientific findings and practical experience on current issues in the vocational education and training. It thus promotes the exchange between educational research, educational practice and educational policy.

On the largest vocational orientation day in Central Germany, companies from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia presented themselves and their professions from industry, commerce and trade, from agriculture, the civil service as well as from the communication and media sector.
CorEdu welcomed the interested parties to their stand and informed them about the possibilities of spending time abroad during the training. As the feedback from the visitors to the CorEdu staff has shown, stays abroad in vocational training are rather unknown among parents and adolescents. The majority of young visitors reported back to CorEdu that training for them by being able to do an internship abroad is more attractive.
Stays abroad are also anchored in the Vocational Training Act. The Vocational Training Reform Act of March 23, 2005 acc. Section 2 (3) BBiG has newly added periods abroad to the law. This provision provides that parts of vocational training can be carried out abroad if this serves the educational purpose. Thus, the time spent abroad not only for the personal and professional development of the individual is a profit but it is also counted on the training period.

At the invitation of Engagement Global, CorEdu presented its experience of working with vocational schools in the context of the Vocational Training Without Borders initiative in the framework of the "Train the Trainer" conference. The aim of the interactive workshop was to present methods and tools to increase the participation of VET schools in international school partnerships and to jointly define quality criteria for addressing VET schools.

This year, the educational travel to Hungary took place again in cooperation with the Lohmar Institute for Continuing Education e.V.
The aim of the educational trip is to get an insight into the current social and political development of Hungary. By dealing with the economic and political course of the Orban government, the potentials and dangers for the further development of the European community of states are summed up. The main reforms of the government in the areas of media, education and society are analyzed and a critical view of their consequences for the Hungarian civil society, as well as for the European community of nations thrown. Discussions continue on the impact of national societal changes in Hungary on the identification of Hungarian citizens with Europe.
The program of the political education trip with the focus "Between national identity and European affiliation in Hungary" started with the parliamentary visit and the participation in the ceremonial speech of the president Orban in honor of the victims of the national uprising in front of the House of Terror in 1956. The contents of his speech were critically reflected in the seminar and possible effects of the rhetoric of President Orban on society were discussed.
How do the German economy and the current politics "tolerate" themselves in Hungary? Is Hungary´s anti-European attitude, as attributed by the European Union, also an issue in the economic cooperation?
These and other exciting topics were addressed at the AHK Budapest.
Is there a serious political opposition and a democratic alternative to the current ruling party in Hungary? What chances do they have and how professionally are they organized?
These questions were discussed with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the newly founded political party Momentum Mozgalom in the café of the great Hungarian thinker - also in the light of the elections in Hungary in 2018.
Contributions to press and media freedom, the situation of the Roma and the life and work of Jewish communities in Hungary rounded off the program.

Four lecturers from the Taizhou University spent three months in Leipzig at CorEdu. Methodical-didactic, intercultural and scientific elements of the tailor-made lectures at CorEdu enriched the first part of the educational program and personal discussions with German lecturers, trainers and scientists rounded off the program. The second part of the program included study visits to different universities and enterprises in Saxony to get to know the peculiarities of the dual academies in Germany.
Improving the goal of applied research and academic teaching at the Taizhou University is a great but exciting challenge for CorEdu. Thanks to our staff and regional partners we were able to equip the Chinese lecturers with up to date knowledge, relevant skills and competences for their future work.

On 9 and 10 October 2017, CorEdu represented the German National Team of ECVET Experts at the European conference "Using ECVET Principles in Work Based Learning with Special Focus on Involvement
of All Relevant Stakeholders", organized by the Slovak National Agency, SAAIC.
At the invitation of the Slovak colleagues, we introduced the "Guidelines for employers for promoting the learning outcomes approach in the work based learning", which was developed by CorEdu.
We hope that our guide will give an added value for all countries with a school-based vocational training system with combined internships without the existence of uniform and nationally recognized training plan. The guide should support teachers and trainers by the implementation of tools to systematically assess and recognize competences and to secure the learning outcomes visible and sustainable.

The 19th ZWH-Educational Conference took place on 5th and 6th October 2017 in the Handwerkskammer Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Stade in Lüneburg. The mobility coaches of the Chambers of Commerce and
Industry, the Chambers of Crafts and the mobility coaches of the further chamber-independent consultant bodies also met during the education conference. We shared our past and future activities
within the nationwide program “vocational education and training without borders.”
The exchange of experiences between the mobility coaches within the framework of the network meeting is a valuable tool to benefit from the good practice examples, new and creative ideas of the coaches and make these experiences useful for our future consultations.
CorEdu is one of the chamber-independent consultant bodies in Leipzig supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
Our new ad about the benefits of training without borders was also presented.
In the summer of 2017, CorEdu welcomed 30 Chinese apprentices from the 2nd Light Industry School in Shanghai. The stay offered many exciting and varied program items for the trainees.
We visited the Vocational School Center in Riesa and attended the class to learn about the similarities and differences in the German and Chinese classes. Afterwards we enjoyed noodles from the Riesa noodle factory. We looked at their glass production and found out that the first station of the museum in Riesa begins with the history of noodles in China. The Chinese apprentices were very happy about that.
The program also included points for creativity. After a full-day photo shoot with the Leipzig School of Design, the students then got to know the art of the cocktail expert, Katja Schirmer. Since love (for Leipzig) is known to go through the stomach, the trainers of the Fortbildungszentrum für Gastgewerbe introduced the students to the Saxon cuisine and provided a unique culinary experience and tasting.
We would like to thank the BSZ Riesa, Teigwaren Riesa, the Leipzig School of Design, the Fortbildungszentrum für Gastgewerbe and Ms Claudia Ahnert, who enriched the photo shoot on our creative day by highlighting the natural beauty of the students with her cosmetics.
The CEDEFOP- report on "Tackling unemployment while addressing skill mismatch" reviews recent policies and practices aiming to tackle unemployment through addressing skill mismatch in the EU-28 Member States.
According to the report, "The main contributions from education and training to combatting skill shortages are guiding students to professions where their skills are needed, reforming qualification standards, and adapting curricula in cooperation with employers (or their representatives). Consistency is required between the labour market (and skill shortages) and the choices made by students. This may be achieved by supporting more direct contact between schools and students on the one hand and the social partners on the other. This means not only offering the students self-service systems, but also accompanying them with personal counselling to ensure that they can find and use the information they need and to enable informed career choices." (Reference CEDEFOP).
CorEdus contribution to this topic includes its support of young people by adequately informing and advising them when it comes to setting the course for their own future. Through our initiative „CorWay ...my way into the future“ we offer young people mainly in the 8th to 10th classes the following programs:
CorWay 1: Who am I, what do I want? - Based on the competence and interest analysis we look together with young people for the existing, more or less pronounced competences of their own person. Based on their own interests we design together a "future plan".
CorWay 2: That´s me, I want it! - Through interactive workshop we enable young people to reflect on their own life situation, to develop own plans and to make own decisions.
CorWay 3: My way to the future! - Through the presentation of different professions and through company visits as well as placements in the company we accompany young people to gain insights into various occupational areas.

On 4 and 5 July 2017, the British National Agency ECORYS organized the international conference in Birmingham on the topic "Assessment and recognition of learning outcomes in the national and international educational context". CorEdu, as a member of the National Team of ECVET Experts, was selected as one of the speakers of the event and was given the opportunity to present the training developed by CorEdu to become the "Manager of Transnational Mobility". The further training is attracting a great deal of interest from European education stakeholders, as according to the conference participants, the quality of cross-border mobility is lived very differently by the actors involved. The lack of transparent quality requirements for transnational mobility stays of young people and educational staff make difficult a common understanding of successful planning, organization, implementation and follow-up of mobility stays.
The presented further training concept therefore closes a gap in quality assurance for transnational mobility and offers transparent and comprehensible quality standards.
Many European countries keep their course in the reform of their education systems and continue to develop cooperative education systems. The aim is to achieve greater integration of the VET system with the skills needs of the economy. Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark are considered role models with their dual training systems.
The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training carried out qualitative, exploratory studies in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark as well as in two countries with a primarily school education system, Portugal and Slovakia.
CorEdu was actively involved in the case study Slovakia.

The Shanghai Art and Design Academy is one of the leading designer schools in Shanghai. Their lecturers have many years of experience in prestigious companies, which means that the Art and Design Academy assigns the training a very high practical relevance. Study visits and student project weeks have taken place in Saxony in recent years, and the knowledge and experience of this has flowed into education and teaching in Shanghai.
In April 2017, we visited the Shanghai Art and Design Academy with our cooperation partner from the Leipzig School of Design. We strengthened the cooperation and made new plans for the designer education and training in Shanghai. We thank the Art and Design Academy as well as the Leipzig School of Design for the exciting and enriching encounter.

The cooperation with the 2nd Light Industry School Shanghai started in 2013 when the managing director of CorEdu carried out a research in Shanghai on the planning and implementation of the practical training in the school.
After the research project in Shanghai, the Chinese colleagues got interested in the German dual system. Thanks to the high reputation of the German dual system, different kind of study programs were organized by CorEdu in the subsequent years. For example, study visits by the directors and teachers in Saxony followed, in order to get to know the planning of the practical training in Germany. Additionally, students participated in a four-week advanced training course at the Leipzig Chamber of Crafts to broaden their practical skills and get insight into the work of training centres. After gaining a lot of information about the dual system, the 2nd Light Industry School created a model class with the aim to implement elements of the dual system in their own teaching and training. Accordingly, the curricula of the school were reformed in cooperation with CorEdu, submitted and later on accepted by the Chinese Education Commission. After five years of successful cooperation, we then attended the final exam in Shanghai in April 2017.
We thank the 2nd Light Industry School Shanghai, the German trainer, Claudia Ahnert and the Leipzig Chamber of Crafts for their trust and wish the graduates all the best for their future.
Between January 30 and February 10, 2017, CorEdu received the trainee Damaris from Italy, who is doing her vocational training in a tourism in Venice. Damaris is a scholarship holder within the Erasmus + program of the European Union. She spent a total of four weeks in Leipzig. Having gained insights into the work of hotel management at the InterCity Hotel Leipzig in the first two weeks, she expected a tailor-made program at CorEdu. In this way, she got to know the work of CorEdu in the international co-operation and got first-hand information about the challenges of daily work with various cultures as well as practical tips to deal with them. She attended the career fair in Dresden and got information about the educational offers in the field of tourism and exchanged experiences with German trainees. Especially the dual studies in the tourism sector, which is regarded as a German specialty in the world, have gained their attention. Combining studies at a university with a training in a company at the tertiary level offers versatile possibilities and practical experiences for young people.
She continued to look at the appearance and offers of the travel agencies at the leisure fair in Dresden. She compared the organization, the presentation and the offers of the travel agencies in Dresden with the offers in Italy and reflected the similarities and the differences. She conducted two short field researches on "Current trends in tourism in Germany" and "Why Leipzig as a holiday destination".
Other tourist attractions in Prague as well as trips to Saxon Switzerland, Berlin and Dresden as well as to the flower town of Sebnitz allowed Damaris to get to know Germany better as a tourism specialist as well as a tourist. Thus she carries the history, tradition and zest for life of the Saxons out into the world.
The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training conducted case studies in various European countries, such as Spain, Slovakia, Portugal and Italy, with a focus on the study of training motivation and training situation of companies in the automotive service and automotive production sectors.
The country selection of the Federal Institute represented different models of duality in education and a selection of European states with which Germany is in a bilateral cooperation in VET. The focus was on the analysis of the company level. The identified models were compared with each other, with the German dual vocational training and other existing models of dual vocational training.
CorEdu was actively involved in the case study in Slovakia.

The already 30 years of European cooperation shows that in the vocational education and training the European countries still benefit from each other. Thanks to the European exchange program, almost 1.3 million students from Germany have benefited in the last 30 years.
On the occasion of the Erasmus anniversary celebrations in Berlin on 24 January 2017, the Federal Minister of Education, Prof. Wanka, emphasized that the exchange between the European countries is of existential importance.
Stays abroad strengthen the personality and allow to think beyond the box. For many young people, such stays abroad are the first time that they are traveling alone, far from their home country in another country. Linguistic and cultural differences as well as other ways of working and living demand and encourage the young people and, in addition to their self-esteem and independence, they also strengthen their professional competences.
As part of the Erasmus + program, the vocational training staff also has the opportunity to look over the shoulders of their colleagues in Europe and to participate in a creative and exciting training program through visits or study visits in Europe. As the President of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Eisenmann stressed during the festivities, "to look at what other colleagues do, never does any harm."

Stays abroad enhance the training of the apprentices and increase their prospects on the job market. In the framework of traineeships abroad, the apprentices gain, deepen or strengthen their language and social competencies and also learn about new techniques and company-specific procedures. They also broaden their professional competence.
A stay abroad becomes a success through bilateral twinning of schools, the design and implementation of it. The opportunities of the receiving institution and the requirements as well as demands to the apprentice can be recorded through close collaboration. The development and coordination of targeted learning outcomes for a specific traineeship abroad as well as the determination of methods for documentation and assessment create transparency and ensure sustainability of the acquired knowledge, the skills and competencies.
A good practical example for bilateral exchange traineeships with the orientation on learning outcomes is the German-Polish vocational training orientation. Which was initiated of the German-Polish committee for collaboration in education.
In the framework of a Seminar on German-Polish collaboration in education, possible learning outcome units were created and adapted. These units were created to measure the learning outcomes of traineeships in the sectors of gastronomy and professions in the sectors of electric and automobile between German and Polish vocational schools. Methods of assessment and documentation were aligned with German and Polish professional vocational teachers. CorEdu was supervising the workshop for development of learning outcome units and learning outcomes for specific stays abroad.
On 9 November 2016 the Austrian National Agency Erasmus+ Education (OeAD GmbH) - with the support of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education - organised an international ECVET experts conference with the focus on "Validation of non-formal and informal learning". The event attracted participants from 24 countries.
Ms. Csepe-Bannert, in her function as Member of the German National Team of ECVET-Experts, represented the national team in Vienna and reported on the activities of the German National Team of ECVET Experts. She furthermore introduced the ECVET Quality Label which initiative was developed by the German National Agency to award educational institutions for their good work, to motivate educational institutions to use ECVET in the transnational mobility, and to increase the visibility of educational institutions in the society who are organizing mobilities for learners. The ECVET Quality Label received great attention by the participants. The Label was recognized as a strong instrument to value, motivate and publish users of ECVET.

On the 4th and 5th November, the apprentice and study fair took place in Leipzig. More than 9.200 visitors informed themselves of the latest offers in the sector of the vocational training. In collaboration with the Beratungsstelle für Auslandsaufenthalte in der beruflichen Bildung (IBS, information and advise centre for stays abroad in the vocational training), CorEdu presented the new offers “Apprentices on Tour” and “Move on - for Staff in Vocational Training”.
The programme “Apprentices on Tour” enables apprentices and young professionals in the sectors of gastronomy, confectionery and tourism to go abroad in a European country for at least two weeks.
The programme “Move on - for Staff in Vocational Training” addresses trainers, vocational school teacher, heads of vocational schools and consultants for vocational training. The programme facilitates a stay abroad for at least three days and teaches about various topics in the vocational training.

“Diversity in the vocation” was the title of the series of events in further education with prospective pre-school teachers at various vocational schools in Saxony. In collaboration with WeltOffen e.V., different scenarios of the daily routine of a pre-school teacher were picked and discussed with the participants. In the end, possibilities of actions were worked out. This procedure happened with the aid of various interactive methods.
On 11th and 12th October 2016, a meeting on quality management in transnational mobility took place in Fredericia in Denmark. At the invitation of the Danish Agency for Higher Education, Mrs Csepe-Bannert presented in her function as an ECVET- expert in the national team oft he ECVET-experts on the requirements with regards to quality management in transnational mobility with ECVET.
Stays abroad offer the opportunity for the participants to revaluate their apprenticeship and heighten their chances on the job market. The professional, social and particularly linguistic and intercultural competencies that are gained through the mobility are in demand for employers. These should therefore be described comprehensibly and be approved in the country of origin of the apprentice. For this reason, the quality management should be in focus in all phases: before, during and after the mobility.
Additionally, Mrs Csepe-Bannert presented in Fredericia the ECVET seal, which is awarded for exemplary implementation of the ECVET-tools. The initiative of the NA at the BIBB, the national authority for coordination of ECVET and the national team of the ECVET-experts are held as an innovative method to acknowledge good examples in Europe and it is also good publicity.

In the framework of the educational trip in September 2016, eleven participants visited an integrative preschool in Budapest. The concept of this preschool promotes the creative and musical education of children. It also promotes the integration of the minority culture of the Roma in the Hungarian culture. With music, dance, storytelling and also through dialog and exchange, the children learn about the culture of the Roma as well as the Hungarian culture. Hungarian children also have the opportunity to use the versatile offers together with the other children. “What we seek is that both cultures are brought to the families and with that, we hope that the children sensitise the families for both cultures”, explained Mr Balog, teacher in the preschool.
“Many parents do not have the opportunity, time or education to convey the facets of the Roma culture in its entirety. In many cases, the Romani language is not spoken at home and through that the awareness for the culture fades”, says Mr Balog.
Through the mediation of the Roma culture, not only the awareness for the Roma culture for the children but also their independence, ability to concentrate, their cognitive ability, outgoingness and the fine-motor and gross sensory skills are strengthened. “Our aim is to confront the children with their minority culture and teach them that they do not have to be ashamed about it”, said the teachers in the preschool. Cultural and linguistic differences were integrated in the daily routine through various pedagogic concepts and discussed with all children.
Educational trips to Budapest in Hungray took place in September and October 2016 in cooperation with the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation and the Lohmaer institute for further education. The foci of the trips were “On the Handling of Democracy” and “Between National Identity and European Belonging”. The participants visited various institutions and organisations, for example the Roma Educational Fund, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Greenpeace Magyarország, the university of Andrássy, the Community Radio Civil and Tilos Rádió. Apart from the exchange about the before mentioned topics, the participants visited the parliament, the synagogue in the Jewish quarter of the city and took part in a “Hungaricum”- tour.

What practices and experiences does Valentino need to make him to the best tailor of Milan? And last but not least: what is behind the tradition of the Budapest shoes?
All these things are no longer a secret. Within the framework of an internship in Europe, you as an apprentice, have the opportunity to get to know the secrets of the countries, the knowledge and the experiences of their experts, and to learn this knowledge and these practices themselves. In the context of a EU funded internship abroad, you have the opportunity to spend part of the training period abroad.

Twelve prospective hairdressers from Shanghai completed a seminar in July in Leipzig. Apart from topics such as basic cuts and work scheduling, the students learned different techniques of how to braid hair. A cultural programme complemented the stay in Leipzig. The students visited Berlin and Dresden, tasted specialities from Saxony and learned about the secrets of the manufacturing of traditional gingerbread. CorEdu thanks for the good cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce Leipzig.

In the framework of the German-Polish collaboration in the vocational training, German and Polish headmasters discussed the application of the European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training (ECVET) in the bilateral cooperation in education. CorEdu, as a member of the national team of ECVET experts provided latest practical advise for the implementation of the ECVET ideas in the transnational mobility of German and Polish apprentices.
Obviously, many different languages are spoken around the world. Multiculturalism is part of our daily life, not only through culinary specialities. The interactions with different cultures, languages and customs require a certain amount of sensitivity. These “old” topics were discussed with students from a different angle with regards to the refugee situation in Germany and with a global perspective. These topics were approached in various vocational schools and intermediate schools.
On 9th May 2016 the seminar in further education for consultants for vocational training and mobility took place under the above stated slogan and in cooperation with the DIHK Service GmbH in Hamburg. One of the goals of the seminar was to inform about the opportunities and advantages of a stay abroad during the vocational training and for vocational teachers. Another focus of the seminar was to communicate strategies and tools to integrate stays abroad as an essential part of the vocational training and to make it part of the training strategy of the companies.
